Just starting out in enjoying an off road experience can be tough, since there are so many things that a beginner will need to know before they embark on their adventure. There are many safety regulations, modifications, and environment details to keep in mind while enjoying the sport of off road driving.

When picking out a vehicle for the off road trip, it should be noted cars are clearly out of the question. Cars sit too low to the ground, often are not four-wheel drive, and don’t have the torque necessary for more extreme types of off road adventures. Trucks, SUVs, and Jeeps do quite well, however, and these should be the first choice in the matter.

Tires are a popular subject among off road experts. Depending on the terrain one is going to be traveling in, vastly different tires may be needed. For a muddy adventure, drivers might want a tire that is studded to grip as much ground as possible- even in muddy situations. For rockier fun, a tire that is textured enough to grip even wet rocks is going to be a great asset.

Just like the tires, most factory vehicles will not have the best suspension in the world. The suspension is vital for a smooth ride- even while climbing rocks and scaling cliffs. A subpar suspension will quickly give out and often times “bottom out” the vehicle- which can cause damage in the hundreds or thousands of dollars depending on the accident. As such, obtaining a better suspension is usually necessary.

Where there has been fun, there has also been a competitive sport. Off road trips are no exception, as we can see with the Formula Off Road racing competitions. These competitions are grueling tests of skill and courage- and no beginner should even think of attempting such races before getting at least a year of able experience logged. Even with experience, these competitions can be particularly dangerous.

Even if one’s courage isn’t pristine- having a little off road fun isn’t out of the question. Less extreme times of off road trips may include a casual stroll throughout the woods. This is great for those who like seeing nature but may not be able to traverse a lot of land in a quick amount of time. It’s truly rewarding to see the beauties of nature all in the comfort of one’s own vehicle.

Final Thoughts

Getting the most out of life means getting outside, having fun, and taking advantage of what was given to us all. To get started in the fun sport of off roading, ask experts in the field or see if family and friends have tried the sport themselves and ask for a bit of advice.
