The 1st step in mending an old Lionel train is to get it all cleansed up.

Wipe it all off with a soft fabric to dispatch dust and stain.

The final part in your cleaning is to wipe down the tracks, the wheels of the cars, and any moving parts with a light oil spray. Arrange a pat of the oil on any moving regions, and function it in so that they run smoothly and easy. You can apply a toothpick to catch tiny bits of oil for the small divisions.

Immediately that it is clean and shiny, you can start your repairs.

Make sure all the divisions of the track blended together tightly. If they do not, and then fold the connections back into place with reasonable pairs of pliers. It might take a few attempts to get them just in good order, merely you should be able to get a tough fit.

Take the bodies off of your cars, and visit the insides. Clean them as before, and reckon for broken sections. Its genuinely easy to exchange these divisions yourself. Finally, does your train move? Check it after you’ve cleansed it all, because built up soil and grease could cause the link between the train and the track to be so hard that it prevents it from running. If it’s clean and still doesn’t run, check to see if the plug is functioning. If the plug reckons OK, it may be that the transformer requires repair or replacing.
