Skid lid or crash helmet as it is better known is: a helmet used to protect the head in activities such being a motorcyclist or being a bicyclist. Helmets usually have plenty of soft lining for extra cushion. Manufacturers have their own idea of what they call a skid lid it is in the shorty section of the helmets offered.
Not all bikers like wearing the helmets because they feel like it is uncomfortable. The old thing about it feeling grand with the wind blowing through your hair bit. Then you find the riders that are scared to ride without their helmets. These riders know that they could actually suffer brain trauma if in an accident without a helmet. Why give your brain any more trauma than a hard day at work?
If we just talk about the term skid lid as defined as a crash helmet than you can find many numerous brands and models of helmets. Some people prefer the full-face full head coverage of the full-face helmet. Some bikers would rather have the more open model actually called the open face. These do have high safety ratings from the DOT and Snell. Motocross helmets also have the safety approval from these organizations. There also made for the specific use of motocross. Now if you are just going to put on a show and go at very low speeds there is a helmet called novelty helmet that does not have safety ratings.
The bicycle riders in the 1800s came up with the idea for the first helmet. They noticed they were getting a lot of head injuries due to falling off their real high bikes. The helmet in that day and time was made of the substance called pith. The pith was probably the only thing they had to use back then to make the helmets. The main problem with this was that the pith would not keep its shape in a crash. These were one-time crash helmets and then you had to replace them. The bicyclists only had one concern in a crash namely how hard the road was rather than an oncoming vehicle such as a car. It’s sure a good thing fiberglass has been invented and is used for some of the helmets these days.
What a blast to go for ride on a motorcycle. It is a blast for many different reasons depending on whom you talk to. But many many many bikers love to enjoy the open road and feel part of their environment. There is a great feeling of camaraderie amongst bikers. They loved to band together and go traveling around. Sometimes they even hold events for different organizations for charity. Of course you always have the ones that swear by their brand of bike and those groups will travel together too.
As expensive as cars are why not think about a motorcycle instead? They are a lot cheaper than cars to buy but not necessarily to maintain though. With the huge amount of money that we all have to spend on gas motorcycles are quite thrifty in this area. If the prices at the gas pumps keep going to such heights maybe all of us should ride motorcycles.
Then there are the bikers that participate in a sport event called Motocross. Do you know what this is? Motocross is run on laid out courses with either dirt tracks or some are artificial type surfaces. There is also some rampage in these tracks for jumping sometimes flipping. If a skid lid or helmet was ever needed it is for the sport for sure.
Authorities always suggest and sometimes require a helmet being worn. Check your local laws as far if it is required. Safety wise you are always much more safeguarded with a helmet than without one. Now these helmets or skid lid whichever you like to name them come in all shapes, models, and even colors and other features. Whichever you choose to wear put on your helmet and get on that motorcycle and have safe fun riding your favorite motorcycle.
