If you are in the market for a big, gas-guzzling SUV, then you might as well get the best gas mileage SUV. The gas savings could be huge, saving you a hundred bucks or more per month. But none get great gas mileage; some are simply not quite as awful as others.

People who buy SUVs in today’s economy are obviously not concerned with fuel economy. But there are car companies like Subaru that market their bigger vehicles to the few environmentally conscious SUV buyers. But these vehicles do not get great gas mileage either. But at least this type of vehicle may be the best gas mileage SUV you can find.

The SUV category includes big off-road vehicles, which are supposed to be rugged vehicles. However, the reality is much different; many SUVs are just status symbols for people who like to be seen driving around in the biggest, baddest vehicles on the road. Sitting higher than everyone else, looking down on the low-to-the-ground hybrids.

They are roomy inside and high above the ground, which makes them generally safer in crashes. I say, “safer,” but oftentimes the opposite is true: SUV crashes often result in violent rollovers that injure or kill the driver and/or passengers, due to their higher stance off the road and resulting higher center of gravity. That isn’t to say that SUVs are not safe, however.

But what vehicles are actually considered SUVs instead of just “large cars” is open to debate. The Saturn Outlook, for example, is considered by some to be a SUV and others not. Would this crossover vehicle qualify as the best gas mileage SUV? Who knows, but any vehicle big enough to make you feel like you’re in a SUV should probably be a SUV.

The best gas mileage SUV can still be terrible on gas. Because for the money that you could spend buying a new SUV, you could get a vehicle that was truly fuel-efficient, like a Toyota Prius. Doing your research might just make you come to the conclusion that you don’t even want a big, gas-guzzling vehicle..

If you don’t need much space for cargo or lots of passengers, why pay the extra money that a SUV costs? Because the investment in a hybrid car comes with the added benefit that you are helping America escape the middle east’s grip on our economy.
